Sibling rivalry, adultery and dungeons in medieval times... the year is 1183, with some playful anachronisms, by the playwright James Goldman.

The play tells the story of the Plantagenet family, at Christmas time, locked in a free for all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for the holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom and King Henry’s paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor of Aquitaine says, “Every family has its ups and downs,” and this royal family is no exception!

The Lion in Winter first premiered on Broadway at the Ambassador Theatre on March 3, 1966, starring Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris, who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Eleanor.

It was adapted by Goldman into an Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, starring Peter O'Toole as Kin Henry II and Katharine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine. The film also stars John Castle, Anthony Hopkins (in his film debut in a major role), Jane Merrow, Timothy Dalton (in his film debut) and Nigel Terry.
